How Much Weight Gain Is Appropriate for Expecting Mothers During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, it's entirely normal for a woman's body to undergo weight gain due to the gradual development and growth of the fetus, along with the increased demand for maternal nutrition. So, how much weight gain is appropriate for expectant mothers during pregnancy?

First of all, it's essential to note that each person has a different baseline level of body fat and height, making it impossible to provide an exact number of pounds to gain. Instead, we should consider the pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) of the expectant mothers. Calculating BMI is quite simple, as it involves dividing the pregnant woman's weight (in kilograms) by the square of her height (in meters).

If the pre-pregnancy BMI falls between 18 and 24, gaining approximately 11.5-16 kg during pregnancy is considered appropriate. If the pre-pregnancy BMI is less than 18, then gaining around 12.5-18 kg during pregnancy is considered suitable. If the pre-pregnancy BMI is greater than 24, gaining about 12.5 kg during pregnancy is deemed appropriate.

Inadequate weight gain during pregnancy can lead to fetal growth restriction and low birth weight. On the other hand, excessive weight gain during pregnancy can increase the risk of complications like gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and difficult labor.

So, how can you control your weight gain within a reasonable range during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, it's crucial to maintain a balanced diet, engage in appropriate physical activity, and avoid prolonged periods of sitting or lying down. Excessive sugar consumption, including sugary snacks, high-sugar beverages, chocolate, and coffee, should be avoided. Instead, focus on consuming more green vegetables and fruits while reducing the intake of oily and high-fat foods. Spicy, high-fat, and high-cholesterol foods should also be limited. Controlling weight within an ideal range during pregnancy benefits both the baby and the mother.
